Xi Jinping, Rex Tillerson pledge cooperation over ‘regional hot spots’

One accomplishment of a summit between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping could be a road map for a bilateral investment treaty, business analysts in the United States say.

Comments from Tillerson even went so far as to adopt the freakish, empty diplomatic phrases the Chinese Communist Party always rolls out, like “win-wins” and “mutual respect“.

“You have made a lot of active efforts to achieve a smooth transition in our relationship under the new era”, Xi said.

He suggested that the two countries increase strategic trust and mutual understanding, review bilateral ties from long-term and strategic perspectives and expand fields of cooperation for win-win outcomes, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

He said he had communicated with Mr Trump several times through telephone conversations and messages.

Both President Xi and Secretary Tillerson agreed there are opportunities for greater cooperation between China and the United States, but acknowledged there are, and will be in the future, differences between the two countries.

As long as this communication and understanding relation continues, Tillerson said, the two-way relations will move forward in the right direction.

At least in public, Tillerson adopted a far different tone than that of his boss, who said in a Twitter post on Friday that China had “done little to help” on North Korea, instead saying that the United States looked forward to stronger ties with China.

SpaceX Dragon will return to earth Sunday morning

Dragon’s journey home will be much shorter, however; it’s slated to splash down in the Pacific Ocean at 10:54 a.m. Unlike all the other cargo ships that serve the space station, the SpaceX Dragon capslue is not disposable.

Tillerson has just ended his first official trip to Asia as President Donald Trump’s top diplomat, visiting South Korea, Japan, and China.

Mr Trump has so far been an unpredictable partner for China, attacking Beijing on issues ranging from trade to the South China Sea and in December by talking to Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen. They made vague commitments to work together to press Pyongyang to give up missile and nuclear programs whose development has gained pace in the past four years.

“At present, there is little indication that China is willing to alter its approach in these areas”.

North Korea has tested a powerful new rocket engine, state media said Sunday, with leader Kim Jong-Un hailing the successful test as a “new birth” for the nation’s rocket industry.

State Councilor Yang Jiechi and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held separate meetings with Tillerson on Saturday. China ferociously follows the “One China” policy and believes Taiwan is a rouge province that will sooner or later come to its fold.

Trump has also repeatedly accused China of unfair trade practices, and had made the reshoring of USA manufacturing from the world’s most populous state a key campaign pledge.

Last month, China potentially deprived Mr Kim’s regime of a crucial source of foreign currency by banning imports of North Korean coal for the rest of the year.

In Seoul on Friday, Tillerson said the administration was exploring an array of diplomatic, economic and security measures to put more pressure on North Korea, including tighter sanctions, and that while a military response was possible if the threat from Pyongyang’s missile program grew, “we have many, many steps we can take before we get to that point”.
