Image: Tourists walking the more popular Kokoda Track in PNG
The Papua New Guinea tourism board says Australian and New Zealand trekkers attacked by a group of bandits while walking the Black Cat Track are on their way home.
New details of the attack have emerged, with the husband of one of the trek leader saying the group of 8 suffered knife wounds and had to walk for 6 hours to get help.
Two local porters were also killed in the attack and the Black Cat Track has been temporarily closed.
Georgia Gregarson from the PNG Tourism Authority has confirmed to Neil Mitchell that Australians were among the injured.

“Two of them have injuries, not serious, but they’re safe and are being transported back to Australia,” she said.
Ms Gregarson said the Black Cat Track is not normally dangerous.
“This is not the normal occurrence and police are investigating what led to the attack.
“It is not a common track but it is well-known within Papua New Guinea.”
Charlie Lynn, director of Kokoda Australia, says anger amongst local tribes has been simmering for some time now.
