Labor frontbencher Bill Shorten has declared he wants to lead the party, saying victory is very possible at the next election.

Shorten publicly threw his hat into the ring this hour, saying while he’s under no illusions about the task ahead, he’s the right man for the job.

“I want to lead our party, to grow our membership and grow our movement,” he told a press conference in Melbourne on Thursday.

“I’m under no illusion about the task ahead of us…We must learn the lessons of our defeat and take up the fight.”

Shorten urged supporters not to focus on the Coalition’s negativity with regard to Labor’s accomplishments.

“I will not sit idly by and watch the wreckers trash the accomplishments of the last six years.

“I believe our period in opposition should be about ideas and vision for Australia’s next 10, 20 and 30 years.

“Australia can be an innovative, productive, creative, outwardly focused nation.  We need to be a party of ideas, not just personalities.”

Shorten promised there will be no back-down on the carbon tax under his leadership.  He also hinted Tanya Plibersek will be his pick for his deputy opposition leader.

Asked whether Anthony Albanese will also stand for the leadership, Shorten said he’s had constructive conversations with the outgoing deputy PM, but will leave it to Mr Albanese to declare if he’ll nominate for the leader’s job.

“If Albanese stands, he is a fantastic parliamentarian with excellent experience.  If he were to lead the Labor party, I’d certainly work beside him.”

“Anyone who wants me to say anything negative about a member of the Labor Party will be sorely disappointed,” Shorten said.

“I bring optimism, innovation and I’m hungry for victory.”
