Gov. Sam Brownback told a crowd of about 70 Wichitans Tuesday afternoon at Wichita Area Technical College that he wants to create 100,000 new private sector jobs during a second term.

Brownback, backstopped by about 30 Republican legislators and local businessmen, unveiled “Road Map 2.0” in what he calls the “Kansas Comeback.” The jobs goal is almost twice the 55,000 new private sector jobs Brownback said his economic policies have created in a first term, driving Kansas unemployment down to 4.9 percent at a time of record employment in the state – 1,427,828 people working, the governor said.

“It’s a great time to be Kansas,” the governor said. “This is a great place.”

The Wichita stop was one of three Tuesday by Brownback and Lt. Gov. Jeff Colyer to discuss the road map. Others included Overland Park and Topeka.

It came on a day when the latest statewide polling —- by Rasmussen —- showed Democratic challenger Paul Davis widening his polling lead over Brownback, 51 percent to 41 percent.

After the presentation, Brownback’s staff said the governor would only take questions on the road map.

The governor was greeted at WATC by several Kansas National Education Association protesters, as he has been at other Wichita stops. The KNEA filed a lawsuit Monday against the state, calling the removal of teacher tenure earlier this year by the Kansas Legislature unconstitutional.

The other pieces of the Brownback road map include a stable tax environment for businesses, making Kansas a destination for companies looking to reshore jobs, creating urban zones to revitalize high-poverty areas and increasing retail and event tourism.
