And though his warnings about the possibility of eventual military action over North Korea have raised hackles here, Tillerson received a warm welcome from China’s president on Sunday.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the test was successful and that “the world will soon witness the great significance of the epoch-making victory” that Pyongyang has achieved. The aim of the ICBM would reportedly be to reach the United States mainland.
What Tillerson said in South Korea and Japan was that China was not doing enough to curb North Korean belligerence in the region, while demanding that the United States abandon its allies to the whims of dictator Kim’s nuclear tests.
Wang said China had made “important contributions” to supporting USA engagement with Pyongyang but stressed it was, at its core, an issue between the United States and North Korea. “The policy of strategic patience has ended”.
“If they elevate the threat of their weapons programme to a level that we believe requires action, [a military] option is on the table”.
President Donald Trump on Friday tweeted that “North Korea is behaving very badly” and said “China has done little to help!”.
“I believe Tillerson repeated in the meetings what he said publicly in South Korea and Japan, and backed up Trump in his tweet”, the diplomat told the Times, adding that his cordial words in public “were created to give China ‘face, ‘” and exhibit respect for Beijing before the global community.
“You said that China-US relations can only be friendly”.
Tillerson said Friday at a joint press conference with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se in Seoul that all options were on the table to resolve the Korean Peninsula’s nuclear issue, including diplomatic, security and economic measures.
He said he had communicated with Mr Trump several times through telephone conversations and messages.
The president pointed out that China-US relations should be handled in a long-term and strategic manner to expand cooperative areas and achieve win-win results.
“We should properly handle and manage sensitive issues to promote the healthy and stable development of Sino-U.S. relationship from a new start”, Xi said, according to the South China Morning Post. When Tillerson met Chinese President Xi Jinping on March 19 at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, he focused on the USA and China working together to develop their relationship.
China strongly objects to the installation in South Korea of a missile defense system there, and the polite public words from Tillerson were created to give China “face”, said a diplomat in Beijing who spoke on the condition of anonymity per usual diplomatic custom.
Trump has also repeatedly accused China of unfair trade practices, and had made the reshoring of U.S. manufacturing from the world’s most populous state a key campaign pledge.
President Xi Jinping tells visiting US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that the nations should enhance exchanges at all levels. The U.S.is also planning to build its military power amid North Korea’s growing threats.
Robert Maginnis, senior fellow for national security at the Family Research Council, has been saying for years that the US must seriously consider taking military action to stop North Korea’s march to nuclear weapons status. The North conducted two nuclear tests previous year alone and didn’t respect multiple resolutions or sanctions, as it continued to carry out provocations, including the launch of four ballistic missiles on March 6.
