Sophie Mirabella has told Tony Abbott not to consider her for his cabinet as the battle for Indi continues.

Ms Mirabella was almost assured a place on the frontbench, but she is in serious danger of losing her parliament seat.

Independent candidate Cathy McGowan holds a slender over Ms Mirabella, but a result is not expected for several days.

Ms Mirabella today released the following statement, declaring Mr Abbott should not wait for the Indi result.

FULL STATEMENT FROM SOPHIE MIRABELLA

There is continued speculation about the election outcome in the seat of Indi.

The count in Indi continues to be close and it is now apparent that a clear result will not be known for many days.

In this set of circumstances, I have taken the opportunity to speak to Tony Abbott.

I have expressed to him my pleasure that the sure and steady leadership he demonstrated in the four years prior to the election has continued over the recent days.

He is showing the same strength of character that I have known in him for many, many years.

Tony’s transition to Government is continuing at a strong and steady pace. My desire is that the momentum he has generated since the election continue.

It is now time that our new Prime Minister has absolute freedom to select his new front bench. As my own future in the Parliament is not assured, I have asked that I not be considered for selection.

Around Tony are men and women of great substance who will ably conduct themselves as members of his Cabinet.

Tony has my strongest support as well as my deepest respect and affection. Australians will be very well served by him as our Prime Minister.

This is not about me. This is about our country.

Meanwhile, Cathy McGowan told Neil Mitchell she was feeling very hopeful.

“It’s close, there’s thousands of postal votes to come in and it’s too close to call but I have to say having a thousand votes up my sleeve has made a huge difference to my team, the level of optimism has gone up and we’re very hopeful,” she said.

“But it won’t actually be finished until Friday week because there’s a lot of overseas votes and votes from other parts of Australia to come in yet.

“(But) if the trends keep going the way they are, I’m in a good position.

“It went from ‘we’ve done a really good job and we’re really proud of what we’ve done’ to ‘oh my god this might just happen’, it was an amazing moment.”
