While pleased with the Cougars’ unbeaten season, Carroll continues to place a strong emphasis on shoring up the defense. He credited the Cougars for defeating two physically stronger teams the last two weeks.
“Gaffney and Boiling Springs have strength coaches,” he said. “ A strength coach is needed in 4A football. A strength coach would benefit all of our sports teams, grades seven through 12.”
Carroll said defensive improvement will be a top priority for the Cougars the remainder of the season. “You can’t arm tackle against teams like Gaffney,” he said.
He said there is no lack of effort from the players or coaches. “Our defensive coaches work as hard as any coaches I’ve known,” he said. “Defense is the emphasis in our program.”
Huddling with the players and coaches after last week’s win over defending Big 16 state champions Gaffney, Carroll cited the improvement on the defensive side of the ball.
“You gave up 45 points the previous week and 32 tonight,” Carroll told the defensive personnel. “You’re making progress. We’ll get there.”
