Molded Rubber & Plastics Corp. is seeing work return form China, but a recent survey from Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce found that the migration of re-shoring work to Wisconsin from overseas has been more like a slow trickle than a rush. Of the 261 companies that responded, 4 percent said they had already re-shored jobs from abroad to the U.S. in the last 12 months and another 4 percent said they plan to re-shore over the next year.

Contract manufacturer Molded Rubber & Plastics Corp. is seeing work return after it was off-shored to China.
A longtime customer canceled its contract with Molded Rubber & Plastics Corp. (MRPC) five years ago and elected to move the work to China, but now that customer and a few others are back, said Greg Riemer, president of the company.
MRPC, which operates plants in Butler and Tampa, Fla., makes medical device components and assemblies.
With labor rates in China increasing, the cost of international shipping, material quality and certification requirements in the production process, moving the work back to the U.S. made sense.
“In their case it was a financial decision,” Riemer said. “After being there a couple of years, they looked at the total cost of having the work there – the lead times to source and the quality. They realized it was not to their advantage to have the work there.”
MRPC employs 145 people at its Butler facility and 30 people at its Tampa facility.
“We are fortunate to be growing,” Riemer said. “We’ve added total staff over the years and we’ve hired specifically for that product line four to five new hires. It’s also helped increase our sales and profits.”
