HOLLAND, Mich. – Caledonia’s Nick LoMonaco helped the Fighting Scots boys soccer team with two assists in a 4-3 victory over host Holland West Ottawa on Saturday afternoon.
Caledonia’s goals were scored by four different players: Alex Rubdock, Jordan Veneman, Chase Hicks, and Drew Muller.
Caledonia (4-0-2), the No. 7 ranked team in Division 1, went into the half with a 3-1 lead thanks in part to some plays made with the ball in the air.
“Three goals off of set plays and almost all of our goals were off of headers,” Caledonia coach Christian Niles said. “We’re a big team and like to play the ball in the air.”
Holland West Ottawa coach Brent Wyckoff pinpointed the problem his team faced in the first half.
“We were slow to the ball on defense and allowed three goals on set-plays in the first half, which was disappointing,” Wyckoff said.
West Ottawa rallied for two goals in the second half while allowing only one, keeping the game close.
“We did a good job of being able to come back, but we need to be able to play a full game.” Wyckoff said. “We finished well, but we couldn’t stop their attack.”
Niles recognized West Ottawa’s efforts and his team’s errors after halftime.
“I give Ottawa credit for coming back in the second half,” he said. “We had a couple breakdowns in the second half and Ottawa made us pay. We will be working on shoring those mistakes up in practice next week.”
