Trump administration puts NAFTA on notice

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto are scheduled to meet with Trump soon.

“We’re going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration, and on security at the border”, Trump said at the start of a swearing-in ceremony for top White House staff. Ross says renegotiating NAFTA will be an early priority for the Trump administration.

The report said Australia would increase agricultural trade by US$2.611b (19.2pc) to the 11 other TPP countries led by exports in cereals (US$161m), meat (US$1.61b) and dairy (US$357m).

The Australian government needs to consider alternative trade agreements, now that the Trans-Pacific Partnership is dead, Labor MP Jason Clare says.

NAFTA, along with other trade deals, became a lightning rod for anger in the industrial heartland states that swept Trump to power this month. NAFTA is forged in the interests of global corporations many headquartered in the US.

“If our partners refuse a renegotiation that gives American workers a fair deal, then the President will give notice of the United States’ intent to withdraw from NAFTA“, the statement reads.

President Trump To CIA: Media Is Dishonest, Crowds Were Large

There is simply no comparison between the crowd Friday and at least the crowd at President’s Obama’s 2009 inauguration. After Mr Trump was sworn in on Friday, bleachers down the inaugural parade route were also empty or thinly populated.

Former Republican House speaker Newt Gingrich told The Globe and Mail Friday that he expects Canada will not end up in the gunsights of Trump trade policy because Canadian and USA industries are fairly integrated, saying “Canada may be the least affected country in the world”.

Despite tough-talking President Trump, who campaigned on a protectionist platform to defend United States manufacturing and assist job creation, saying the TPP was bad for his country, Ms Simson said Australian farmers “certainly don’t want to see it over”.

“By fighting for fair but tough trade deals, we can bring jobs back to America’s shores, increase wages, and support USA manufacturing”, the White House said.

Trump intends to end the TPP outright, while NAFTA will meet a similar end if the president is not able negotiate terms that are more agreeable to him, the White House said.

Moreover, if a new bilaterally delivered U.S. policy approach and reshoring were also to be applied to other neighbours, including the countries of the Caribbean, it would rapidly have negative consequences, becoming a disincentive to investors wishing to manufacture or assemble, or use Caribbean offshore services or financial centres to facilitate trade or other forms of access to the US. Imposing those border taxes now would violate NAFTA.

The Ann Arbor-based research organization estimates that a 35% tariff on light vehicles imported from Mexico would quickly lead to a decline of 450,000 cars and trucks in the US because of higher prices, hurting USA dealers and automakers.
