UK PM on Eur tour, seeking reforms – Press TV

Cameron is pushing for the reforms in the 27-nation bloc in a bid to repatriate certain powers from Brussels to appease the eurosceptic members of his Conservative Party.

He has pledged to hold a referendum on Britain’s continued membership in the union.

He left for Madrid on Monday saying he expected the EU submit to treaty change despite top EU officials earlier expressing their opposition to the matter.

Cameron will meet his Spanish counterpart Mariano Rajoy on Monday before leaving for France and talks with French President Francois Hollande.

The British PM will later hold talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, which, as his office announced, will specifically focus on “further discussions about taking forward his (EU) reform agenda”.

This comes as Cameron said in an interview with five European newspapers being published on Monday that the EU needs “change” because it has “sometimes overreached itself with directives and interventions and interferences” in London affairs.

Back in February, EU president Herman van Rompuy warned London that EU leaders are by no means interested in any major treaty change, insisting the focus in coming years would be on shoring up the eurozone, where Britain is not a member.

Cameron will also discuss the situation in Syria and an upcoming G8 summit during his European tour.
