He also stoked ire in Beijing with tweets over Taiwan, North Korea and China’s escalating actions in the South China Sea.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has hailed cooperation with Washington following his meeting with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson as the two countries struggle with the North Korean crisis.
En route to Beijing, Tillerson visited US allies Japan and South Korea where he declared Washington would drop the “failed” approach of strategic patience diplomacy with Pyongyang – a sharp break with China, which favors careful diplomacy over heated rhetoric.
Hours before the meeting between Tillerson and Xi, North Korea stuck its nose under the tent, announcing that it had tested a new high-thrust missile engine that analysts said could be used in an intercontinental missile.
State news agency KCNA said the North’s leader supervised the test of the rocket engine. During his visits to the allied nations, he made a statement that the US will not observe the failed patient diplomacy to North Korea.
On Friday, Tillerson said military action is “on the table” in dealing with Pyongyang after meeting with South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se.
The two sides should grasp the general direction for the development of China-U.S. relations in an attitude responsible for history and future generations, said Xi.
Trump has also repeatedly accused China of unfair trade practices, and had made the reshoring of USA manufacturing from the world’s most populous state a key campaign pledge.
Beijing was Tillerson’s final stop on his first official trip to Asia, which included visits to Japan and South Korea.

Xi said he had communicated with President Donald Trump several times through telephone conversations and messages.
Earlier in March, US media reported that Trump was intending to host Xi at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on April 6-7.
“The real talking was done behind the scenes on Saturday, principally with China’s foreign minister Wang Yi, and North Korea topped the agenda”.
Despite fiery rhetoric on the campaign trail and prior to his inauguration, Trump and his administration have taken a relatively hands off approach to China so far.
He stressed the need for a “results-oriented” relationship with China, adding: “We renewed our determination to work together to convince North Korea to choose a better path and a different future for its people”.
Experts believe that China is reluctant to put harsh pressure on the unpredictability of North Korea.
Advances have alarmed South Korea, sparking the deployment of the US’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defence System (Thaad).
The US and China still do not see eye-to-eye on multiple issues, including the One China policy – that denies global recognition to Taiwan as an independent state, political freedom in Hong Kong, and the rights of the country’s Tibetan minority.
