COIMBATORE: Charging the opposition DMK with not backing the State government on the long-pending Avinashi–Athikadavu flood canal project, AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa assured that the scheme will be implemented when her government took charge in the State after the May 16 Assembly election.
“In April 2013, the Rs 1,862 crore project was submitted to the previous Congress government in Centre in which DMK was also a part. But, it was rejected by the Centre. Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 3.27 crores for preliminary works,” she said, addressing an election rally at Coimbatore on Sunday.

“Once the government is formed under my leadership, Avinashi–Athikadavu scheme will be implemented,” she assured.
Terming Congress–DMK alliance as the coalition of the corrupt, Jayalalithaa said the parties were punished by public for coal scam, 2G spectrum sale scam, Adarsh scam and Commonwealth Games scam. “Now a scam in purchasing helicopter from Italian company has come to light,” she pointed out, adding that DMK was the only government in India dismissed on corruption charge.
Campaigning at Coimbatore, the hub of light engineering and manufacturing, the Chief Minister said the biggest achievement of her government was ending power cut in the State. “In the last five years, State received additional 7,485.5 MW of power. From last June, there has been no power cut in the State,” she added.
Listing out her government’s achievements in the industrial sector, she said the State is one of the top three in India, where there is a favourable condition for industries. “Tamil Nadu is number one in number of industries, labour strength and setting up of new SMEs, second after Maharashtra in GDP, and third in export. It leads in attracting FDI,” she said.
“DMK gave Rs 2,000 worth TV and… in five years they earned Rs 25,000 crore. Now, they have lost this income after Arasu Cable TV provided the service at a cost of Rs 70. That is why they are alleging that industrial growth is affected,” she charged.

Jayalalithaa also gave promises to the voters in Kerala, assuring to take steps to make High Range in Idukki as a tourist spot, creation of a sports university, advance medical facilities and ropeway transportation facility in Munnar. Seven party candidates had won in the recent local body polls there. Condemned the Kerala unit of the CPM for allegedly attacking AIADMK candidates contesting polls there, Jayalalithaa urged the Election Commission to take steps to ensure peaceful conduct of election in Kerala.
